Kevin Strickland is a 62-year-old African-American man who has spent the last 43 years in prison for a crime both his prosecutor and an eye witness say he did NOT commit.

It is not obvious from the photo above, but Mr. Strickland is in a wheelchair.

Here is the evidence in favor of his innocence:

  1. Two men who admitted to the murders have said that Strickland is innocent.
  2. A third suspect who was never charged in the murders has also claimed Strickland is innocent.
  3. The sole survivor in the attacks who was originally a witness has recanted her testimony and now believes Strickland to be innocent.
  4. Recall that eye-witness identification is often unreliable, as this article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows. While it is difficult to say with certainty how inaccurate eye-witness identification is, according to this same article, nearly 70 percent of cases in which DNA has exonerated a convicted person involve faulty identification. Furthermore, witness certainty may have no relationship to the actual accuracy of the identification as confidence can often be misplaced.
  5. This eyewitness identification is flawed for another reason. On the night of the murders, the witness was unable to identify Strickland but did identify two of the four men involved in the shooting. She made the identification only later when her sister’s boyfriend suggested that another gunman might have been Strickland. Thus, her identification was influenced by someone who was, apparently, not at the scene of the crime.
  6. The only physical evidence linking Strickland to the crime was fingerprints in a suspect’s car. BUT, Strickland had known this man since childhood and had ridden in his vehicle.
  7. The Missouri governor, Mike Parsons, pardoned 31 other men but said that Strickland’s pardon was not a priority.
  8. The prosecutor of the case has now said she believes that Strickland is FACTUALLY innocent.
  9. Please do your own research on this case and if you believe that Mr. Strickland is innocent, email the governor and ask for his release.
  10. If you could take one extra step, could you please sign the Common Cause petition for his release?
