Might I add another piece? You are already telling them to use peer-reviewed research or at least articles written by recognized experts even if the medium is not a peer-reviewed journal.

Maybe they should carry their research one step further and read comments on the original article from knowledgeable persons who have written letters to the journal editor. Often, these responses provide valuable insight.
