Remember, though, it is Biden who claims to have authored the 1994 crime bill with its cruelly long sentences and discriminatory provisions that resulted in a great increase in the number of incarcerated African American males.
On the other hand, it is Trump who signed a sentencing reform bill that repealed this bill's worst features.
Recall, too, that Biden voted for the Iraq war, called for booths on the ground there as early as 1998, and headed committee hearing weighted with pro-war witnesses.
He also served as vice president of an administration that destabilized both Libya and Syria, thus increasing the violence and hardship experienced by large numbers of brown people. Biden claims to have opposed the Libya debacle now but at the time he praised it.
Yet, Trump became the first president in many years not to either start a war or join a war started by others.
Thus, Trump's administration created fewer widows, orphans, amputees, and early deaths than did the Obama-Biden administration and the W. Bush, and HW Bush administrations.
None of this excuses other Trump misdeeds such as the separation of children from parents at the border or the increase in air strikes over the Horn of Africa or the imposition of sanctions against Iran and Venezuela, thus immiserating the poorest people in those countries.
However, an honest comparison with other presidents will show that Trump was not *uniquely* evil and that some of his policies like the sentencing reform and the increased funding of HBCUs were in fact rather enlightened.
