In my experience, what "nice guy" really means is that the man is conventional and has never had an original thought in his life. If he had, he would describe himself as compassionate, a good listener, someone who likes to help. He would not fall back on the bland cliché of "nice guy."
Being conventional is not a guarantee that someone will be a nice guy when things get difficult.
